Hibiscus pink

I just receive a hibiscus plant as an end of year gift from one of my students. Since I have not had a hibiscus plant before I pulled out the two gardening books I have in my library and looked up a little about them. I then discussed some options with my husband. I think we have figured out the best spot, which is empty due to a dogwood that succumbed to some sort of disease a couple years ago. It seems these plants need sun and moisture, so hopefully the front yard with some drainage from the gutter will help it thrive.

I am not positive which variety of hibiscus we have since the one bloom on it closed up last night, just before my student brought it in today, so I look forward to seeing the bud on top opening up soon. (I found the photograph above in the wikipedia commons area.)

UPDATE: After looking for some other photographs I realize that my parents had a type of hibiscus called a Rose of Sharon (shown above) when I was growing up in West Virginia.

Sticky Note Holders with Gel Pens

As a teacher myself, I always try to think of some ways to show my appreciation for my daughters’ teachers at Christmas, Teacher Appreciation Week, and the end of the year. I try to do something for all of the teachers since I remember the specialty teachers not getting as many tokens as I received when I was a classroom teacher. I am also trying to stay on a tight budget, so I have to keep that in mind when shopping for ideas as well.

more gifts ready to head to school

Since my kids go to the same elementary school and have the same librarian, same physical education teacher, same, music teacher, and so forth every year, it can be hard to come up with fresh new ideas so they don’t receive the same type of gift from our family every year. For example, at Christmas I have given teachers my pine cone Christmas ornaments, but I obviously won’t give that to the art teacher every single year for six years in a row.

A while back Staples had a great deal on their sticky notes, which I took advantage of with some kind of teacher appreciation in mind. They had a coupon for free ones once and a mail in rebate another time. From there, I did a search online for ideas. I found a few tutorials online for different types of Post It or sticky note holders, but ended up utilizing a combination of the one found on Dawn’s Stamping Studio blog and Add a Little Dazzle’s blog.

For the mini pens I also utilized Staples. I did not get them for free, but they were on sale this week and I used some Staples Rewards to help purchase them. They have both black and colorful inks for these.

Papers used for this project came from Die Cuts With A View Spring stacks. I believe these were from 2010 since I am certain I did not purchase them this year, but may even be from as far back as 2009. I always buy my DCWV stacks on clearance.

Are you creating anything special for the teachers in your children’s lives?
