We went to the library on New Year’s Eve for a new set of books to read. I thought I would share my impressions of the random books that my daughters chose at the library.
Miss Malarkey Leaves No Reader Behind by Judy Finchler & Kevin O’Malley with illustrations by Kevin O’Malley
This one I picked up randomly. I noticed there were several in this series and thought if the kids liked it there would be more to get next week. I think this is more of a boy book than a girl book, however. The main character is a boy who likes all things boy related, but does not like to read. His teacher is convinced she will find a book for every kid in the class that they will love during the year. There are some good ideas of books to read if you like the same things as the boy in the book listed at the end.
The Wild Christmas Reindeer by Jan Brett
My oldest has been exposed to several books by this author in preschool and kindergarten. Apparently The Mitten is very popular with school teachers. I love the illustrations of any book by this author, but not every book has a tale worthy of the illustrations. This is a cute tale of a girl who is asked to get the reindeer ready for Santa. She decides she must be strong and rough in order to get this done, which does not work. Once she learns to be gentle and help, everything goes much better.
Good Night, D.W. by Marc Brown
We get sucked into getting an Arthur or Berenstein Bears book nearly every week. This is the one for this week. D.W. cannot sleep and does what every kid does, yell for someone and then not take the advice given. I would not recommend this one if you have a kid who gets ideas from books; you may have someone calling out to you several times that night. Fortunately for us, neither kid tried D.W.’s tricks this time.
Fox At School by Edward Marshall and pictures by James Marshall
This came from the easy/leveled readers section of the library since my oldest is learning to read. It has three short stories in it about Fox’s adventures in school—Fox on Stage, Fox Escapes, and Fox in Charge. I like that in Fox on Stage, Fox pays a real consequence for not learning his lines. In Fox Escapes, he deals with fear and in Fox in Charge, Fox tries to be in charge of the class when the teacher leaves the room. I imagine we will try out other books about Fox in the future.
